On July 26th, Mary's House for Older Adults officially broke ground at 401 Anacostia Road SE in the Fort Dupont Neighborhood of Washington D.C. Dedicated to the city's LGBTQ seniors, Mary's House will contain 15 single-occupancy residences and over 5,000 square feet of communal living space. The House will allow for local seniors to bring out their true selves in a safe space. Hamel Builders partnered with Waldon Studio Architects and Mary's House Anacostia Road Owner LLC to begin this project.
The groundbreaking, attended by our own Gene Eady & Oscar Maccio, was a celebration of a decade long process leading to the construction stage. Also in attendance was Mayor Muriel Bowser as well as D.C. council members and the D.C Congressional Delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton.
This July marks the beginning of a year long development project.
To better understand the project, we sat down with Gene Eady, the Project Executive for Mary's House. The project will be in two phases; first the demolition of an existing structure followed by the construction of Mary's House. The project is a standard building with 15 apartments. It contains many amenities such as a rooftop terrace with a pergola, perfect for community gatherings, as well as exercise and quiet rooms, and long-term storage. Gene mentioned that he is very excited to be working on a project that will have such a positive impact on the local community.
Special thanks to our project team!
